Hull Guitar Club
Guitar lessons in Hull in a relaxed, structured format for adults
Adult-focused, small, band-style guitar training where most of the progress happens in the lesson, and you end up confident playing guitar with others.
Is this You?
Maybe you recognise yourself in one of these:
- You’ve always wanted to play guitar, but never quite started.
- You’ve had lessons before, but life got busy and the guitar ended up gathering dust again.
- You can play a bit, but only on your own – the idea of playing with other people feels intimidating.
- You’re retired or approaching retirement and want to finally do something just for yourself by learning to play guitar.
- You’re a busy adult with work, family and responsibilities, and you don’t have hours every week to practise at home.
If that sounds familiar, Hull Guitar Club is designed specifically for you.
How Hull Guitar Club works (in a nutshell)
At Hull Guitar Club, I specialise in adult-focused guitar training that’s built around real life and real music.
Instead of traditional “show and tell” lessons, we use:
- Very small band-style training classes (usually 1–3 adults), where you learn by playing real music together in a mini-band setting.
- Custom practice tracks written specifically for my adult students, so the songs you work on are designed around the skills you need next.
- 1-to-1 foundations for brand-new players, so if you’re starting from scratch you first get some personal time to build solid basics and confidence before joining the band-style sessions.
The aim is simple:
You make steady, visible progress during the lesson itself and gradually become confident playing real music with other people.
Why Hull Guitar Club works for adults
Because everything is built around very small band-style sessions and custom practice tracks, adults tend to thrive here.
- Progress happens in the lesson – you get lots of repetitions with real music, so you still move forward even in the weeks where you haven’t managed to practise much at home.
- A fun, light-hearted way to learn – it’s social and motivating, with other adults in the room who are in the same boat as you, which makes the whole thing feel much more relaxed.
- Build real rhythm and timing – you’re playing in time with real music as you learn, so your sense of rhythm develops naturally every week.
- Feel confident around other players – you get used to playing with people, not just practising on your own at home, so your confidence grows naturally week by week.
- Easy to follow – you always know what you’re working on next, and the tracks and materials are laid out clearly for you. As one of my students, David, put it: “Practising has become a pleasure rather than a chore.”
What you can expect each month
Most of my students are adults in Hull (or surrounding areas) who come once a week and follow a simple, structured path:
- Start with a short 1-to-1 foundations phase if you’re brand new, so we can get your basic chords, rhythms and confidence in place.
- Join a very small band-style training class when you’re ready, playing your own part alongside one or two other adults.
- Spend a few weeks at a time on focused practice tracks, each one built around a specific set of skills you’re developing.
- Over time, become the kind of player who can plug in and play real music with others so it starts to feel natural and easy.

John’s story – real progress at any age
“Although I have owned a guitar for over 60 years, I have never been able to play it to my satisfaction. I have always known the basic chords, but I found it next to impossible to progress to the next level and to play the songs I really wanted to. My guitar playing ambitions had well and truly stalled!
I started having lessons with Tim two years ago. Since then, my guitar playing ability has improved exponentially and I now have the skills and confidence to progress to the next level!
When I first started, I was concerned that I would show myself up due to my lack of ability and technical knowledge. This proved to be groundless, as each session is carefully crafted such that all abilities are catered for and everyone is able to progress at their own pace in a friendly, low-pressure environment.
They say that it’s good for your wellbeing to learn a musical instrument in old age, I can confirm that this is true!”
John spent decades stuck at basic chords. Now he’s finally playing the music he always wanted to, in a friendly, low-pressure setting where every ability level is looked after.
How to get started:
The best way to see if this style of adult guitar lessons is for you is to start with a quick phone chat.
I like to do this before booking an intro because it keeps everything clear, personal, and relevant to what you actually want from the guitar.
Step 1 – A short phone call
We’ll have a brief chat to:
- Talk about your goals and musical taste
- Make sure this approach fits what you’re looking for
- Walk through how the first steps work for your current level
If we both feel like we’re a good match, we’ll book your free introductory session.
Step 2 – Your free intro session
In your intro session we will:
- Play a simple piece of music that fits your current ability level (even if you’re a total beginner)
- If you’re new to guitar, we’ll also go over how to read guitar tab
- Decide together whether it’s a good fit
